Project 1: Contextualization
Project 2: Perspective
Topic: Islam and it's perception
For this project, I wanted my focus to be on mental health, specifically depression and anxiety. The reason for this is because of my own personal struggle with both of these feelings throughout my high school years. By putting myself in my own shoes in the project, it was easy to incorporate the thinking skill of perspective into the piece because everything is through my eyes. To illustrate my feelings about the subject, I wanted to try to show the isolated darkness that I feel when struggling with these issues. Through this project, I learned more about the issues I have always struggled with, as well as ways to cope with them.
I incorporated my perspective into the art having the art be from my eyes as I look into the mirror. I wanted to show a the beautiful world around me, full of life and color, and contrast that with my grey, darkened mind-state that I go through. People that go through these things, including myself, usually suffer in silence. There is a common saying of people "putting on a mask" of false happiness to hide their true state of being. I decided to insert that saying into my piece quite literally by having myself preparing to put on my false "face" before going out into the world. To create this piece, I went for a new style I have no experience with by using digital paint on the program Procreate.
For this project, I did not have an English portion to it because I wrote a college essay in place of it.

Project 3: Reasoning
Topic: Islam and it's perception
For this project, I wanted my topic to be my religion of islam. Being that I live in the USA and have seen both sides of this issue from those around me and my own upbringing, I want my piece to show more than just what Islam is about, but also just the good people within it, and how a lot of people outside of the religion relate to us. Our core values mirror those of Christians, which is the dominant religion in the US and is in fact what the country was founded on. I want to show our roots all connecting together not just as people, but as believers so that we all can acknowledge the strength we have together. through this project, I was able to learn more about other religions and see how close we all are as people.
Using the theme of roots, I illustrated that theme through this graphite drawing of what I wanted to be the tree of life that represented the people of Islam. I wrote the biggest values of islam underneath the tree in Arabic, the language of Muslims. At the base of the roots is the word light, which in Islam can represent the love and mercy of Allah (God) and all of the things he is to us. I used reasoning by showing the values of us Muslims as to why we truly act the way we act, and hw we are different than the perceptions the world has about us.
For the English portion of this project, I created a brochure that tackles all of the misconceptions about Islam and educated people about the true nature of the religion. Through using the reasoning thinking skill, I was able to lay out why people have perceived us in a negative light. I then was able to refute these points with the truth of the religion, and separate true muslims from the terrorists of the world.

Project 4: Synthesis
Topic: Your Lie in April
The topic I chose was the anime Your Lie in April. Your Lie in April is a show about Kousei, a piano prodigy who has renounced playing since the death of his mother, who was abusive towards him while pushing him to be the best young piano player in Japan. Kousei then is introduced to Kaori, a wild violinist who he falls in love with while she tries to reignite his love for piano. The story has heavy themes to me of unrequited love, loss of passion, and finding new happiness that I can honesty really relate to and draw my own experience with. Through this topic, i was able to learn what itmeans to love and how to deal with the feelings that the show demonstrates.
For my artwork, I decided to take inspiration from a shot in the opening where the protagonist, Kousei, is laying in the grass with the cherry blossom petals falling around him. This is because I see a lot of myself withing Kousei, and I wanted to illustrate that parallel. This scene shows Kousei at peace while lying with his friends, the source of his happiness and growth, as mine were to me.
The opening of Your Lie in April uses the song Hikaru Nara, which lays many clues to the feelings and experiences of Kousei and Kaori. I thing that the point of choosing this song is as a declaration of the feelings that they have pent inside. All of their love and admiration they have, that they truly never actually got the chance to say to each other properly. I have dealt with my own feelings like this, and I was inspired by a video I saw to draw my own synopsis and conclusions about the song and then I made it my own by pulling my own parallel experience and feelings into it.
